Host Led Experience THE WONDERFUL ODDBALLS This category of games does not exactly fit with the M.O. of an escape room per se, but let me clarify. ​ For me to consider an online remote experience as a " remote escape room ", I would, to the very least, require it to have a real life location that actually houses an escape room set. By this definition, options that utilize voice only broadcast (with no live video), or those containing puzzles solely presented as virtual online games, will be listed here instead. For instance, an audio led "escape room" would be included here. (This does NOT imply they're inferior--just different.) ​ Furthermore, if a particular game lacks a clear objective or process in the traditional escape room sense, it may fall under this section as well. If you remember the golden age of Flash games, you already know the basis. These included games, however, definitely lean more towards the undeniable signature vibe of escape games, as opposed to just any online entertainment. You know what that means... PUZZLES! The most obvious instance would be a point and click room escape that originally spawned this entire industry, but much has evolved since. Nowadays, there exists wide array of format, theme, and style. Most contemporary examples involve games that aim to solve a mystery or complete a mission through a series of challenges. Remote Escape Rooms CLOSEST FORM TO PHYSICAL ROOMS This is, by far, the most authentic imitation to being in an actual escape room. When done right, it is absolutely fantastic. ​ Essentially , it works like this: ​ First, everyone needs the capability to participate in a web conference call meeting, most popularly via an app called Zoom . (Some may use Google Meet .) Then, all players, a game master referred as the "avatar", and other game hosting staff enter the same web meeting. Everyone will then communicate through real time live video feed and audio chat. The aforementioned "avatar" will broadcast, most often by a camera strapped to a body harness, what they see inside an actual escape room location to the participants. The patrons see what the avatar see. The players then command this avatar to act on their behalf, to explore, to search, and to investigate the set. Staying At Home A LESS THAN ROSY SITUATION In the matter of weeks, the coronavirus outbreak in the United States changed the face of the country. Due to the robust transmissibility of this new bug, social distancing became the new norm. To reduce risk of spreading, a minimum of six feet between individuals was highly advised, and crowd gatherings were quickly prohibited. ​ However, things escalated quickly as new infection cases rose exponentially, and many states eventually implemented stay at home orders.
